Anyone else?

Has anyone else had experience with breastfeeding successfully after a reduction surgery? I had mine about 7 yrs ago and am about 35 weeks pregant. I have had some changes and am now leaking (yay!) but just curious about supply and supplementing because I have no idea what to expect.

Sorry, no direct experience here, but Dr. Google has some answers.

Breastfeeding after breast reduction

Can I breastfeed?

Probably. If your nipple and areola are still attached to the breast tissue beneath them, there's a good chance you'll be able to nurse. However, if the nipple was removed and then placed on a reconstructed breast, damage to the nerves, milk ducts, and breast tissue may limit your milk flow and diminish sensation in your nipples. Nerves are vital to breastfeeding because they trigger the release of prolactin and oxytocin, two hormones that affect milk production and letdown.

In general, the longer it's been since the surgery, the more sensation you're likely to have in your nipple and areola and the more milk you're likely to produce.

Yes. Had the surgery in 1993 and had babies in 1998, 2002 and 2009. Breasted them with success, though they were all supplemented to some extent (20 - 50 %).

Find a lactation consultant NOW who has experience helping BFAR moms, get Diane West's BFAR book, and be prepared. Good luck!

47, thanks so much for the book and fbar suggestions. I hadn't heard of that before.
I know that they completely removed everything and reattached. I was astonished that anything at all would happen after that. At this point I will be happy with any production from the girls!
