Sine he was about 2 and a half months old, my DS has slept through the night. He also slept for pretty long periods of time, going to bed at 10pm and not waking up until 10 or 11 am. The only times he would wake up at night were if he was sick or there was some loud noise. And teething never bothered his sleep habits. Heck, I usually didn't know he was teething until I saw the tooth pop out.

He just turned 14 months old. And, for the past week or so, he has been waking up much earlier, like around 7 or 8 am, and usually fights going to sleep until 11pm. And he's started waking up in the middle of the night a lot too, usually more than once a night. One night he was so hysterical for such a long time that I finally took him to the hospital. Of course, as soon as we got there he was fine.

Now, I'm not really whining about the effect this is having on me, since I appreciate how lucky I've been up until now. But I'm worried about him getting enough sleep, and what could be wrong that is making him do this. He used to sleep 11-13 hours at night and take one nap, usually lasting between 1 and 2 hours. Now he only gets about 8 hours of sleep a night, and his nap time hasn't changed.

Am I just overreacting? Will he get over this anytime soon? Is he getting enough sleep for his age? Thanks!

Has he recently started walking or any other new skill? I know when my daughter started walking that was all she wanted to do and her sleep habits changed for a week or two. He may have just came to a point also that he needs less sleep. I will look around and see if I have any other info. is he prone to ear infections?

Thanks for your reply!

No, he's never had an ear infection, and he doesn't have any symptoms of having one now.

And he's been walking holding onto furniture for awhile now (maybe about 6 weeks or so), but he hasn't yet walked independently.

That's why I'm so frustrated--I've tried to think of everything that could cause this, but I can't think of anything. I might call his ped next week and ask him if he has any suggestions, but he's been out of town all week and I don't like the guy who's covering for him.

Maybe, since he's been pulling up & cruising for 6 weeks, it may be that he's about ready to walk unassisted...?

It's also possible that it's just one of those mysteries of childhood that we never wind up figuring out & he'll get all sorted out soon!

And, even though previous teeth came in easy, it could be that the next round of teeth (how many does he have?) may be more difficult.

Hope things settle down for you (and I'm green with envy that he slept thru so early!)
