I have a black lab and beige carpet and my Hoover Windtunnel works great.

I've heard that Dyson vacs are the best for pet hair, but I don't have a link handy.

I have a Fantom Thunder and a very hairy Golden Retriever and long-haired cat. It works really well on the carpet, not so much on the furniture. I end up using a lint roller on the furniture to get all the hair up.

I have a Dirt Devil upright bagless with a HEPA filter. It cleaned up all of the animal hair from the previous tenant. She had about a dozen cats roaming the house before we moved in, and never cleaned the floors once. :shudder
I would recommend spending the extra on a Dyson. I notice that my Dirt Devil loses suction very frequently because the HEPA filter gets clogged up. It's really a pain in the ass.
