I think it's time to give my oldest some regular chores to do around the house. He already helps out here and there, when I ask, but I would like to give him a short list of things that need to be done daily/weekly.

What kind of chores are age-appropriate? Garbage? Loading/unloading the dishwasher? Sweeping?

I don't want to feel like the wicked stepmother in Cinderella, but I didn't have chores when I was young and I wish I had because I think it would have helped me as I got older.

Making his own bed.
Keeping his toys/room picked up.
Dusting his room.
Helping with trash collection.
Sweeping/mopping/vacuuming (his room and maybe another?).
Putting his own laundry away (including the dirty stuff, too).

How is that for starters?

Two years ago I taught my (then) 8 year old how to do LAUNDRY. It is priceless. If he has no clean socks, it is entirely his fault. If he can operate a Playstation or a computer, he can operate the washing machine.

I have a chore chart on the fridge. They have one or two things daily that they are responsible for. Any extra jobs they do can be added to the bottom for extra allowance.

I mainly make him do the things that I hate to do the most...vacuuming the stairs, taking out garbage and bringing the cans back up once a week, unloading dishwasher.

If they don't do the chores on the chart, they have to shovel dog poop out of the backyard as punishment.
