My ds is 7 mos old and has always had really runny poop. He's eating more solids now and today he had his first non-runny poop. He was kind of struggling a little before he pooped so I'm wondering if he's constipated? Is it normal for them to start pooping normally? How can you tell if your baby is constipated? He's still nursing about 8 times a day.

Are you still nursing him before offering solids? Was the bm hard and dry?

Yes, I'm still offering to nurse before and after solids. The bm wasn't hard or dry. thanks for the link, I'm off to check it out.

What are you feeding him? Once you start solids the bm's become more firm in texture but should not become hard and pellet like.

If you feeding cereal I would stop and start something else.

He eats the baby oatmeal and fruit in the morning and at dinner time he eats a few bites of veggies. I know the cereal can cause constipation but I thought that oatmeal was less binding then the rice and he never liked the rice. The bm wasn't hard so maybe it is just the solids. I miss the easy to clean-up baby poops.

If it wasn't hard, it's probably not constipation. My first had constipation as baby (outgrew it around the age of 2), his were very dry and hard (TMI, I know) and he occasionally cried while passing them. :(

We finally discovered that one prune a day and constipation goes away. ;)

Thanks for all the advice. I don't think he's constipated any more since he just had a massive diaper blow-out. It was the kind where I immediately had to throw him in the tub. It tired him out because now he is sound asleep.
