I have a UTI and was prescribed Macrobid which is not to be taken if breastfeeding . The pharmacist said that the two most prescribed meds for UTI have the same warning and he knew of no alternate med.

I don't breastfeed fulltime so I'd hate to think that what she does get from me will have to stop. I was pumping but that became to painfull and I never had let-down anyways. If I went ahead and just pumped/dumped for the 7-10 days it takes to get passed this, would my supply be ok? Does anyone know of alternative methods for treating UTI's? I read for prevention that water and cranberry juice helps as water flushes the urethea out and the acid in cranberry juice keeps it too acidic for the germs to adhere. Think this would help now that I already have a UTI?

Kellymom.com has a partial list of drugs approved by the AAP for use during lactation. Macrobid is on it. Maybe you could talk to your pediatrician, or an LC.

My physicians assistant told me it was safe and I verified it on Kellysmom page. I've taken it more than once.

Macrobid is AAP approved and listed as category L2 in Hale's.

If you need a copy of this to take to your doctor, you could contact your nearest LLL Leader and she should be able to help you. Alternatively, you could call your hospital's IBCLC and ask for the information.

I got a call back from the peds office. They say according to a reference book they have that one should not breastfeed while taking macrobid if the infant is less than 4 weeks old. This is what the pharmacist told me as well per the information from the drug manufactuer.

I then got a call back from my OBs' nurse. She advised it would be ok as well. I advised her of the above and she said she was sure my Dr wouldn't agree but she would get back to me. Ugh.

Hale does say in infants over 4 weeks. Mine was older than that. I should have asked how old the baby is. You may want to get Hale or Newman's e-mail and ask what they recommend for younger babies.

Got a call back from my nurse. She said my Dr would go ahead with the pharmacist recommendation to not take it due to DDs' age so I was given keflex(sp). Now pray we don't get yeast infections!

Eat yogurt, take acidophilus, do anything to avoid yeast. Good that you got a different antibiotic though.

I should have mentioned age as well.
How old is your baby?
