Sleep on his own helllppppp

So my son used to sleep in his crib just fine...4 weeks till 8 mths...then one time i let him cry it out for about 25 off and on and ever since then he has been petrified of his crib and he now sleeps between my husband and i...ughhhhhh what should i do? I can't stand to hear him cry.... But i know i have to allow him to be able to sooth himself to sleep... Just hard to know he's wondering why i won't hold him and comfort him when he screaming in his room with crocodile tears streaming from his little cheeks...any advise? I realize this is something that should have been done a long tine ago but it didn't so now what? He started walking at 10.5 months and is very sturdy...has great balance. I called and asked the nurse at his pedia office and they said at was ok to lower crib bar to a toddler bar so he different so trapped in crib. However it has not helped he still acts frantic as soon i put him in his bed.... What should i do?

Have him sleep with you. That one episode of crying it out seems to have traumatized him and he's scared of being abandoned. My kids all slept with us for a minimum of 5 years. He won't be a baby forever, and he won't need to sleep with you forever. Just let him get the reassurance that he needs now
