antibiotics and nursing

I have a UTI and they gave me Omnicef to take. My OB assured me it was OK to nurse while taking it. Today was baby's 2 week checkup and I mentioned to the doc that he acted like his tummy was bothering him and his poop seemed a little more on the watery side. She said maybe it was the antibiotic that I am taking and suggested that I pump and dump until I finish them.

I just started them Tuesday night and am supposed to take them for ten days. I haven't nursed him tonight and am missing it so much Click here to enlarge

For anyone who has had to take antibiotics while nursing, did it affect your baby's bowels?? I kind of want to just stop taking the antibiotics Click here to enlarge

don't stop taking the abx. You could talk to your doc about switching to something that will be easier on the baby though.

look into acidophilous supplements to give the baby (and take yourself) while you're on it. It can help with his tummy, and will help prevent thrush too.

I think it's crap that they told you to stop bfing. BF baby poop is often watery, and the fussiness may not even be related.

I hope mary comes along with links for you, I'm just firing this off quickly off the top of my head.

This is what Medications and Mother's Milk 2002(aka Hale's) has to say:
"Cefdinir
trade:Omnicef

...
Lactation risk category L2
....

Pediatric concerns: none reported via milk. Milk levels virtually undectable."

Since the milk levels are virtually undetectable,I would think it would be highly unlikely that it is the antibiotic causing the problem. I looked on Hale's board, and am not finding anything(which in your case, would be a good signClick here to enlarge) Don't stop taking the antibiotics. It's best to finish the full course when prescribed them. If you honestly feel, though, that it is the medication causing your baby's tummy troubles, maybe ask to be switched to another? Also, take those probiotics! Divy is telling the truth. Very important.Click here to enlarge
