Help! Owie owie owie!

Ok, with ds I had tons of plugged ducts which turned into mastitis. I have felt lucky to have gotten away from that this time. Well, dd is 15 months and the night before last nursed about threee million times because she has a little cold. I woke up with some pain under my arm thinking it was a plugged duct. The pain stayed throughout the day. To get rid of it, I nursed dd multiple times on that side, massaged the duct, drank lots of water and took some warm showers.

The weird thing is that before when I have had plugged ducts, if I massage them while she is eating they will go away. This one is not going away very easily. It doesn't feel as plugged, but it still hurts.

I would say keep up with what you are doing. Can you try expressing or pumping a little on that side? I've had to use a warm washcloth and keep massaging to relieve that kind of pain before. Good luck!

Try ibuprofen for the pain.

I just took some ibuprofen because I started to get that achy feeling like I was getting a fever. I am paranoid about mastitis. Last time I had it, my fever got up to 104 and I was hallucinating. It feels almost swollen under my arm. It may be from me massaging it around so much Click here to enlarge

Oh,no! I hope you don't end up with a full-blown case of mastitis. The ibuprofen will probably help some...not only with the pain, but also with the swelling.

Another thing that helps is to point the baby's nose or chin towards where the pain is. That can help unplug a duct (although you may end up in a weird position). Keep on with the moist heat and massaging.

Annette - I just read that aiming the baby toward the plugged duct may not be as helpful as first thought.

Advice to point baby's chin (or nose) toward the plugged area is outdated and was based on the idea that the milk ducts take a nice, direct route to the nipple - recent research tells us that this is not true, and that a particular duct might begin in one area of the breast but can "wander" in many different directions before terminating in any area of the nipple.

Try 1200 mg of lecithin 3x/day.

Doctor! Today! If it is indeed a developing case of mastitis it is better caught earlier than later. As you well know, mastitis is not to be messed with.

I'm not going to jinx myself, but I think I stopped the M word that cannot be spoken. I have been taking lecithin and garlic and I still feel ok. My boobah does still hurt though Click here to enlarge

If you still have a plug, one of the best things to try(after you've done a session of moist heat/massage) is to nurse on all fours(yes, really) with your baby beneath you. This allows your breasts to hang freely from your chest wall with no obstructions plus it has the added benefit of gravity.

I am trying to imagine the logistics of this. I have heard it before, but I don't think it would work with dd. Nursing her is like nursing a standing octopus Click here to enlarge

I got a plugged duct a while back and found these to work GREAT! It was gone in about 2.5 days. I felt another one developing 2 days ago, used the heat wrap and the pain was completely gone by the end of the day - I guess I caught it so early it didn't have a chance to fully develop. Try that and see if it works for you. Click here to enlarge

I suffered horrible plugged ducts when I nursed my older DD and I did this ALL THE TIME. I would lay her on her back and ummm, do exactly what Mary described.Click here to enlarge Oh, and I would usually just start the day off like that because DD was so hungry for the first feeding, she didn't care how she was getting it.Click here to enlarge

See dd is like one of those bugs that gets really pissed if you lay her on her back. She automatically starts kicking and tries to flip over Click here to enlarge
