dmages, about crying and gas

I saw your post on lucy's thread. I went through a colicky baby the first time around and thought I would let you know that the worst is almost over. Crying peaks around 6 weeks. Some babies are just fussy in the beginning.

Also, the crying is likely what is causing the gas, rather than the gas causing the crying. They gulp air when they cry hard. There is a book called The Happiest Baby on the Block by Harvey Karp which has some good suggestion for soothing fussy babies.

It is too bad newborns do not come with owner's manuals. Especially for the first one.

Just a thought...are you still taking your prenatal vits? Both dd and ds showed it when I forgot to take them, being fussy and out of sorts. My mood definitely shows it as well.

Thanks for the heads up rockmom. I think he gulps in a lot of air when he comfort nurses too. I've been unlatching him and using distraction and other comfort techniques until I'm pretty sure he's after food instead of comfort. He likes to be folded in half and held real tight when his tummy hurts. We've also used baths and last night we resorted to a hot water bottle--that was like a miracle--he was immediately feeling better.

Spet--I'm taking my vitamins. Click here to enlarge At least most of the time. There have been a few times when I couldn't remember what day I took them and so I let it go. How is that little bean of yours?
