Excited

I took a promotion several years ago that doubled my work hours (to an avg 80/hr week) for a raise of less than $4k. I work in a male dominated industry, and many men wanted to end their career with the position I was promoted into.
After much thought, I requested a voluntary demotion to an administrative position. Going back to a 40 hr week, no after-hours/weekend response in person or via phone/email, no late night/early morning meetings.....I will have time to focus on my family and our household, and myself, and my stress will be next to none. My husband also works a solid 80/hr week, so we will no longer juggle responsibilities now that I will always be available.
The announcement and transfer to my new position will be made public Monday, and I just had to say it somewhere now.....in my field, everyone is going to wonder what is wrong with me for going backwards instead of forwards. I was considered a rising star, and had won many awards and received much recognition.....but I'm taking this demotion (and only losing $4k/year) to focus on my family and enjoy my life. I am so, so excited!!!
Thanks for listening!!

That sounds like an exciting and positive change! Good for you!

And Julie said "Futz", "Futz" said Julie.
"Futz around until my return."
The definition of "futz" was something we had yet to learn,
But we tried to do it anyway, anyway,
'Cause Julie, we'll do anything you say.

Good for you! But how in the hell did you both work 80/weeks with kids? That doesn't even seem possible.

That's awesome, I would totally do that. People ask me all the time why I have been in the same position for so long and it's because I have a flexible schedule and freedom to go to school events and doctor appointments and work from home once a week. That means more to me than more money.

I'll buck the trend, I don't think her kids are all that in the cute department. not all kids are cute. they have other attributes that make up for that, but look at tweedle's aiden, that is a cute kid. and your kids mel, those are adorable kids. Her's are average. I wouldn't take a second look passing her on the street.

I recently (Oct 24th to be exact Click here to enlarge) made a similar change. I was pushed into a position that I was good at, and it was interesting, but I knew going into it that it would be way too stressful for this point in my life. That's why I declined it the first time but they kept pushing anyway. Click here to enlarge As I expected, the stress took a huge toll on my personal life, especially as DH has a very stressful job as well. It was so not worth it. Unfortunately for me, demoting or transferring wasn't really an option, at least not in the time frame I was looking at. So I quit and went back to the part time position I had before, in order to regroup.

My personal life is 100x better - kids are happier, DH is happier and I am happier. I don't love what I'm doing right now (I'm a nurse on a crazy intense acute floor) but I only work 2 shifts a week so I can suck it up for the next couple years while I complete my master's.

Hope your outcome is a positive one as well, definitely sounds like it will be! Good luck and enjoy the less hours and less stress. Click here to enlarge

I think you'll find that working to live is so much better than living to work, Amy. I'm happy for you!

ďI donít know why we donít create some sort of system where we could train [Syrian refugees] to then go back to their own country and then fight for that country. Doesnít somebody have to stay in the Middle East and make the Middle East a better place to live?Ē

Petition the White House to Adopt the Chartreuse Awareness Ribbon for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse.

"While there are many colors for various causes, (for example, Child Abuse and Autism both share the same color ribbon) there is no nationally recognized ribbon in chartreuse. Child sexual abuse affects so many children and yet prevention organizations struggle to receive the funding they need to raise awareness and educate people on all the simple ways we can empower our children, families, and communities against abuse."

Holy crap, an extra 40 hours/week for a whopping $4K/year? Click here to enlarge WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO DO THIS WHY WHY WHYYYYYY? I mean, if you took those 40 hours and got a second job at minimum wage that would be $16,640/year, at least in my state. Click here to enlarge

Their expectations are insane and abuse. Good for you for telling them to shove it (politely enough to revert to your old position).

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.

I worked 80 hours/week in my early 20s when I was single with no kids. No way no how, now!

Enjoy all your extra spare time!

It sounds like it will be a great year for you and your family. 80 hours a week is insane.
