I've already suggested to the owners that they need to make it free but give everyone the perks of paid membership (pictures, avs, PMs, private forums, etc.)

It's probably too little too late. They should have done something when they acquired the board. They didn't, which shows it wasn't important. I think almost everyone has moved on.
