car seat /booster/5 point

WE have this car seat for Tyler who is 3 years old, 40 lbs and 39 inches tall.

http://www.gracobaby.com/catalog/pro...ID=1&subCatID=

Am I not supose to use the 5 point anymore??? Now use the seat belt??

The Platinum CarGo youth booster car seat is to be used forward-facing only. When using the Platinum CarGo youth booster car seat with its harness, the car seat may be used by children 20 to 40 lbs and between 27 and 43 inches tall. When using the Platinum CarGo youth booster car seat without its harness, as a belt positioning booster, the car seat may be used by children 30 to 100 lbs and between 35 and 54 inches. In order to use the Platinum CarGo youth booster car seat without its harnesss the child must be able to sit upright unassisted.

Educate me.

Yes, you must stop using the seat with the internal harness.

How "3" is he? A new three, or an almost-four? Best practice is to keep kids harnessed to 40 pounds and at least four years old, because kids need to be mature enough to sit properly the whole time using a belt positioning booster.

There are a few seats on the market that harness beyond 40 pounds. The Nania Airway harnesses to 50 pounds then converts to a booster. It can be found online for about $130. The rest are Britax seats. The Marathon and Wizard harness to 65 pounds, the Wizard has enhanced side impact protection via head wings. The Marathon can be found for about $200 online, the Wizard for about $240-$260. The Husky harnesses to 80 pounds and can be bought online for about $200. All the Britax seats have EPS (bike helmet) foam; the Airway does not.

Here's crash test videos comparing a harnessed seat and a booster seat.

Pictures of my dd (will be 4 in June, 42 inches tall and 41 pounds) in the Airway: http://photobucket.com/albums/0603/s...y182005088.jpg (she'll outgrow this seat in 6-12 months by height)

And in the Husky: http://photobucket.com/albums/0603/s...y182005068.jpg

And in the Graco Turbo Booster: http://photobucket.com/albums/0603/s...y182005083.jpg

The booster fits her well, but I'm just not comfortable with her riding in one full-time. It's only used for short trips around town in dh's truck. In the next few months we'll be getting another higher Husky (or possibly the new Safety 1st Apex) so we'll have a harnessed seat in each vehicle, and we'll use the booster for when dd's friends ride with us.

He just turned three. I really don't want to buy another seat. We've only had this one a year. Wugh

You know your child best, backinthesaddle. If you feel he can stay seated well in a booster, then that is the choice you get to make as his parent!

TIP: If you have switchable retractors in your vehicle, make sure he is in that seating position and switch it to lock each time while he learns to sit well.
