Is a second base really necessary?
We have the SafeSeat that will primarily be used in my car. Is it necessary to get a second base for the times dh or grandparents will have him?

No, it's not necessary. The SS1 can be installed with just the carrier. Personally, though, I find it easier to leave a base in someone's car just to click the carrier in

It isn't necessary, but most people find it easier. Installing with a seatbelt isn't difficult, but I'd worry about someone who only does it occasionally doing it correctly every time. The base install is so easy on the Safe Seat, I'd just go with the base. Then you can be sure someone who doesn't use it frequently just has to click it in.
