I think ds is finally outgrowing his Marathon

M is 4, he's 43" tall, 42ish pounds.
His head (ears really) seem to be too high for the shell of the Marathon (dh's car). If he puts his head back, like he's asleep, he's got a little room to go. But when he is sitting normally I feel like he's too tall for it.

And the straps for his nautilus (in my car) are getting very tough to buckle. They are almost too short to manage. After he is buckled and the strap is tightened, I might have an inch of strap leftover. And this has nothing to do with a winter jacket since I warm the car ahead of time and he wears only a fleece in his seat.

I really wanted to keep him harnessed for a while longer. Is there something I am missing? Am I doing something totally wrong and unsafe? Click here to enlarge

Per the request, we live in NH. I drive an 06 Mazda5, and dh drives a 00 Impala (no latch in the impala.

Are his ears at the top of the shell? My 4 yr old ds is pretty much the same size and still fits in the Marathon and Decathlon just fine. And I think he's got short legs and a long body, which should make him outgrow it height wise faster.

His ears are very close to the top of the shell of the marathon if his head isn't resting against the back. I don't want to get another nautilus if the straps are going to be useless in a few months. That seems like a lot of money for the bells and whistles that won't really be used. But I don't want to give up the harness yet. He's not in a rush to be out of it, and I know he's safer in it.
