I have my first chemistry test today

Click here to enlarge And I am scared shitless Click here to enlarge.

I'm freaked out because of everything I've heard about this teacher and his tests. My mom had him even, so I know if SHE thought they're hard that they likely are. Most only pass due to his curve!

He's a horrible, horrible teacher. He just spouts off information and doesn't explain a damn thing. We're in CONCEPTS of Chemistry, dumpass. Explain this shit to us. We're here because we know NOTHING about chemistry!!

The test is over the first 4 chapters, and I've been memorizing definitions, elements and their symbols and valences and taught MYSELF to do conversion problems over the past 4 days. I'm just hoping for the best at this point.

I could use some smarty-pants thoughts and prayers too Click here to enlarge

Yes, how did it go? My physiology teacher was sort of like that, it drove me nuts. He was all over the map - disorganized. It just made it so much harder to learn, especially a subject like Physiology which is already really complicated. I feel for you.

Sorry I didn't come back to let you know Click here to enlarge. Fucker JUST gave us the tests back today Click here to enlarge. Do teachers not realize how stressful it is wondering how you did on a test? Especially a FIRST test with said teacher?

Anyway....I got a B!! Click here to enlarge Click here to enlarge Click here to enlarge

That's with the curve, but median was 62. Average was 58. I got a 73 out of 100. I'm not too thrilled with that number, but I'm beyond ecstatic to have gotten a B! A couple of the ones I missed were the ones where you say "DUH!!" when you look at it now Click here to enlarge.

So, can anyone explain how a grading curve works? This is the first teacher I've ever had that graded on a curve, so I'm a little lost on how it actually works.

That's great! Click here to enlarge

I believe a curve works by taking the highest score in the class and making that the top - so if 92 was the highest score then your percentage is derived from that instead of 100.

So in that example, if the highest score was 92 in your class, then your 73/100 would really be 73/92 which is a 79%.

My chem prof does not grade on a curve.

Last term there was a gal who was .5 away from an A, he wouldn't budge. She even got a 100% on the final and he wouldn't.

The way my teachers have always curved the grades is to give the highest scoring person the number of points they need to have 100, then give everyone else in the class that same number of points. If the highest grade is 95 then everyone in the class gets 5 points added to their score.
