How to help my husband?

My husband is trying to quit. How can I make it less stressful for him? I have never smoked so I have no clue what this is like for him but I want to help give him the tools he needs to do well.

What helped you quit?

What did the non-smokers in your life do that annoyed you while you were going through the process? What did they do that helped?

Thanks

The patch helped me to quit. That and a lot of candy. I have gained about 10 pounds in a month and a half, but I can only work on one thing at a time. I wouldn't recommend the "eat instead of smoke" method, but I figure that being fat is the lesser of two evils at this point. Click here to enlarge

What annoyed me was being asked every single fucking day "Are you still not smoking?". Click here to enlarge That drove me up the wall to the point of wanting to have a cigarette just so I could say NO! and hope that they'd stop asking.

What helped the most was not talking about it, unless I brought it up. For me, talking about a cigarette made me want to have one. Also, being understanding that my snarkiness wasn't intentional. I felt like shit for the first two weeks, honestly.

Good luck to your DH!

Thanks a bunch! I will not mention it to him! I appreciate that as I am the type that would be like "SO, how's it going?"

This might sound crazy, but having a pack of cigarettes around somewhere actually helps me. If I have a major craving, I know they are there even though I don't smoke one. But if I were having a major craving and knew there was no cigarette any where around, I honestly think I'd break down and go buy them and then smoke one.

Is that weird? Click here to enlarge It's worked for me so far. Just knowing they are there helps.

I know someone who did the same thing, Tat. She carried a pack in her purse with her everywhere she went, but didn't smoke them.

I hated being asked how it was going as well.

I say let him be. He will be proud enough of himself to tell you and you won't even have to ask.
