Windows XP SP2
If you run Windows XP, you should get the newest service pack as soon as possible. To check which version of Windows you are running, select Help > About from the menu of any folder.
* Microsoft Windows Update (get any critical updates)
* Direct SP2 download (warning: very large file)

Firefox Web Browser
If you normally use Internet Explorer for web browsing, consider switching to Firefox. It includes a good popup blocker, and is virtually immune to browser hijacking.
* Firefox

Spyware/Adware Removers
Note: you may need to run more than one of these to catch everything
* Spybot
* Ad-Aware

Free Virus Online Scanners
Note: neither of these require software to be installed on your computer
* Trend Micro HouseCall
* Panda ActiveScan

Free Software Firewalls
* ZoneAlarm
* BlackICE

Prevent Messenger Popups
Note: The messenger service is not the same thing as MSN Messenger
* Disable the Messenger service

In spite of the fact that some people are having problems with SP2, I still cannot recommend it strongly enough for all home users. Just make sure to create a system restore point before installing (I think it does that itself actually) and if you have problems, boot to safe mode and uninstall it.

There will always be people who have problems with any software update, and they will always be the most vocal (the people who don't have problems rarely post). But XP SP2 is a great piece of software, and I've installed it on literally dozens of computers without a problem. Other than installing Firefox and learning to click "No" by default, installing SP2 is the biggest thing you can do to improve the security of your Windows XP computer.

I wouldn't know honestly, I run a seperate NAT/firewall box myself and haven't used firewall software in several years. The two I listed were popular, and both of them will do a competent job. It's critical that anyone who runs Windows without a hardware firewall use something though. For that matter, the built-in SP2 firewall should work perfectly well if you're running SP2.
