Your most popular questions answered!
Q - What is the best weight loss program to follow?
A - It depends on you and your body. There is no one
program that is perfect for everyone. Some people do
well on programs such as Weight Watchers, others do
well on a low-carb plan, and some do best on a
combination of different things. You need to decide what
program works best for you. Find something you are
comfortable with and can stick to long term.
Q - I'm trying to lose weight, and I've been working out
all week. I stepped on the scale and didn't lose anything.
What gives?
A - It can be frustrating when you don't see results from
your hard work. Chances are, even if you didn't lose
weight, you probably lost inches. Take your
measurements once every week, you'll often see results
from measuring quicker than from the scale. There are
many other factors to consider, too, if you aren't losing
weight. Are you watching your portion sizes carefully,
and drinking water? Are you about to start your period?
These things can hinder weight loss as well. Don't give
up, though! If you continue to exercise and eat healthy,
you will lose weight!
Q - I have NO willpower, but I want to lose weight! What can I do?
A - Focus on a goal for youself. It will give you incentive
to lose the weight. If you have incentive, your motivation
and willpower will follow. Find a friend or a group of
people to help keep you motivated and excited about it.
Q - Is there a way to lose weight safely while breastfeeding?
A - Yes! While it is true that breastfeeding mothers need
extra calories, you can still lose weight without hurting
your milk supply. The key to successful weight loss while
nursing is doing it slowly. A gradual weight loss of about
a pound a week is a good, safe way to lose the extra
weight. Getting exercise is also important. Taking brisk
30 minute walks will help you tone up, lose the weight,
and have more energy to care for your demanding baby.
If you are looking for a certain program to follow, Weight
Watchers offers a plan for nursing mothers.
Q - I've been losing weight for the past two months,
and now my weight loss has stopped. I'm not doing
anything different, can this be a plateau, and what can I
do?
A- Yes, it certainly sounds like a plateau. A plateau
occurs when your metabolism decreases. To break
through a plateau, you need to increase the intensity of
your exercise. For example, if you are walking 4 days a
week, 30 minutes at a time, change it up a bit by adding
intervals (walking for 5 minutes, running for 2 minutes). If
you have not added resistance training to your workouts,
this would be the time to do so. Working with weights
can greatly increase your metabolism in a short amount
of time. You should also keep a food journal of what you
eat, to help you keep track of your calorie intake. Most of
all, don't deprive yourself. Depriving yourself of food will
only make things worse for you, and can do you harm.
Plateaus can be
