Sophiaszandra Sticky candies are more harmful because they remain on our kids teeth. so while they eating sticky candy we should make an effort to remove any excess candy left on their teeth.

Things like juice and raisins can be just as bad. Raisins stick in your or your child's teeth. Chocolate melts away for the most part.

Not that I would give gum to toddlers, but it does help clean teeth.

Dentist's rules

Last visit at the dentist I learned that parents need to brush their youngsters teeth until they are 11 years old. Thats a whole lot of teeths to be brushed!

Brushing

My son brushes his teeth at least once a day. He has never had cavaties and he is almost 4. He didnt go get his first checkup till April of this year. I just started with a health and wellness company and their toothpaste is alot better for kids and grown ups. We have started using it and it helps keep food off your teeth through out the day and when you brush them again it just comes right off. If you want to know more about the healthier and safer products just send me an email and ill give you more information. always4myfamily@cox.net

As for the dentist. When I went to my sons dentist he said there really is no reason for them to see kids till they are three because by then all their teeth are in and then they can make sure everything is ok. UNLESS you think there is a problem then there is no reason to take them. Also the dentist said to make sure the drink water from the faucet because they need the flouride. Bottle water doesnt have flouride in it. Thats what helps the kids enamal on their teeth. My daughter is 1 1/2 and I thought I would need to take her to the dentist because her teeth are coming in wierd. she got six front teeth and now its her molars. She still hasnt gotten all her front teeth in. The dr said that was normal though.

Hope this helps!!!

Yeah it can be very frustrating esp when you are super careful about their diet... but kids enamel is just very delicate to begin with... some kids more than others... What type of toothpaste do you use now?

You should really look into (or ask your dentist about) trying ProNamel for Children to help re-strengthen her enamel and to prevent further erosion/decay.

(FYI--- you can actually print a coupon for a $1 off a tube at www.ProNamelforChildren.com)

yippyme Yeah, most dentists say to wait until they are 3 years old unless they have specific issues. I would check around though for different pediatric dentists who might take him in for a check-up... it's always good to be pro-active and make sure you're taking all the right steps to protect his teeth! Acid erosion is very common in kids bc of their soft enamel... and only dentists can really see the first signs of it.

Have you heard about ProNamel for Children? It's a new kid's toothpaste that was developed with dentists to protect against acid erosion... it actually works by re-strengthening tooth enamel... maybe something to ask his dentist about.

Good luck and hope you get him in for an appt! Looks like you are on the right track

betholio We brush his teeth 2-3 times per day. I've read that kids should only get juice with meals and water between meals. I follow that rule unless he's sick.

The local Health Unit recommends that kids be seen by at dentist by the time they're one. I've called around, no dentist is interested in seeing him till he's at least 3. I find that annoying.

Food & Teeth

All moms know that soda and candy is really bad for your little ones teeth (and yours too!) but it's pretty frustrating that even some of the "good" things we encourage them to have like fruits, apple sauce and juice can wear their enamel too...

Besides watching what your LO eats... how do you try to protect their teeth?!
