I'm going to stick with it and get a damned A. He isn't worth it and I'll put it on his assessment at the end of the semester if he doesn't back off. This has and always will be my favorite part of the end of the school year. Esp. when it comes to asshat teachers! |

I had a World Religions course as an undergrad and it was indeed unbiased and an explanation of them. Very interesting course. Sorry you ended up with this guy-from his response he sounds like an ass. Hope for a B

Well he responded. Apparently I misheard every comment because he would never say such things. Also in the future he wants me to bring these things up to him during class. Nevermind that I did bring up separate things during class time that probably frustrated my classmates because they just wanted to get out of there. He's discouraging me from speaking to him privately. I'm going to stick with it and get a damned A. He isn't worth it and I'll put it on his assessment at the end of the semester if he doesn't back off. Did I mention that he's showing the movie "Priest" in class? It's an rated R movie that was boycotted by the Catholic Church. I can see the younger Mormon students in the class walking out when he hits 'play' as they don't watch those movies. |

Unfortunate as it may be, I have found that a majority of college professors let their belief systems be known in one way or another. An anti- Bush remark or a political joke. I hear one-sided comments all the time. Sometimes I think half the point of college is testing us to see if we can tolerate a different viewpoint for 16 weeks at a time. |

I think what set me off is that he flaunted his ability to be openminded and said that he was approaching it from an agnostic point of view. Then he goes and slams Christianity.  If he doesn't change his pattern by next week, I'll have to withdraw and take a filler class to keep my financial aid. That would mean that in order to graduate next semester I would have to still take another Humanities and it would increase my courseload. But if I leave, I'll ensure that they know why. I hate this. I was barely able to bite my tongue during Multiculturalism when the teacher blamed white Christians for all of the oppression in the world. For people who pride themselves in being so tolerant, they can only do so because they are blind to their prejudices. |

The guy who teaches the religion classes at my college is the best anthropology teacher they have on staff. You'll find that many anthropologists and archaeologists tend to athiests. Agnostic at best. When you get someone who is rabid in their beliefs, whatever they are, it's hard to keep it out of a conversation. I know you think it's out of line but quite honestly, that's the way it is sometimes. I don't suggest calling the guy out on it. Just take what you want from the class and try to let the rest go in one ear and out the other. If you confront this guy now then it's going to be a really, really shitty semester for you. I'm sorry you're dealing with that kind of stuff. I had an english teacher who was a true pain in the ass to deal with and arguing with him cost me my 4.0. |

| Lizard | I would be inerested to hear the response to the email as well. I've never had to take a religion course. My sister took three of them and she said that they were the worst. I think all the religious teachers are biased because she had some awful ones as well. Why can't you drop the course? |

Wugh. If the course title is World Religions, I would certainly expect that ALL religions of the world would be taught equally, and in a completely unbiased manner. Perhaps if his own beliefs are getting in the way of accomplishing that, then it may be time for him to teach a different class. Sorry it wasn't what you'd hoped, GS. I'd have been very disappointed as well. I hope he takes your email to heart. |

Sybermom vs. World Religions teacher I knew it could go bad but I chose this course because I am very interested in learning about other people's faiths. I hoped that the teacher would be impartial and explain all religions as sacred and not be interested in judging them. This is how my night went. I already wrote him an e-mail. Dear [judgemental asshole] I have a concern. I was very interested in taking your class because I am fascinated by cultures and faiths and try to view them without judgement. I know that this is how you intended to teach this class. However last evening I came away feeling as though you had violated your own standards of being unbiased with your emphatic belief that there is no Trinity. Perhaps there is no mention of the word trinity in the Bible, but there are interpretations that many people find intrinsic to their faith. Yesterday you declared that Christ was not God. You mocked the thought "How could I be my father?" I find that horrific. Whether or not you believe it is irrelevant. This is an explanation of what others believe and that it was I came there for. Your comments on literalism were similarly biased. For some people in this world, literal interpretation of their scriptures are fundamental to their belief system. As I know no other faith systems to use as an example I will use my own. You stated that the belief that one way is the only way will inevitably cause evil and it shouldn't be embraced. My Christ said that He is the way, the truth and the life. He said that himself and you want me to consider his words lies? Or perhaps to consider the authors and editors of his words to be lies? This is how people are supposed to be introduced to world religions? From your words and your demeanor, I anticipated in the first half hour that I would truly enjoy this class. Now I fear that it will be an exercise in restraint for me as you unabashedly make statements about my religion. Moreso you made sweeping generalizations about 'conservatives and liberals'. You may feel that only conservatives impose their beliefs on others. I can say that liberals impose their disbelief on others. Both are incendiary comments. Please tell me that this is not typical of your weekly presentation. I cannot drop the course and if I had to be exposed to these types of judgements every week I would be very dismayed. It's gonna be a long 16 weeks.
