marinara We're on post, too. Got lucky and at the end of a street so very little traffic and the yard came with a full fence in place. The neighbors are nice, quiet and not nosy, best neighbors so far!

PopsicleEater bumping an old thread...
We live on base in Florida. They just tore down all the houses across the street, leaving us with very few neighbors and a beautiful view of the gulf. I am seriously going to miss it here

Dragon shaped dong Right now we are on base. I hate it and wish we could get the hell out of here.

sandra-B Off base, I hated living in housing.

pumpernickel We have never lived on base but are currently on the waiting list. Here the cost of living is much higher than BAH and the housing has been completely renovated and is absolutely gorgeous. It's a lot nicer than what we can afford out in town.

Concordia We live off base. We'll never live on base, if we have a choice.

ErikasMess We've lived on base in Japan, on base in NC, and we live in town here. The housing set up is weird, there are little areas scattered throughout the entire area that are base housing. The crime is insane there because there isn't anyone to moderate who goes in and out. But, for the size of the house we live in, we'd be better off in housing.

califred marineswife are you in P'cola?

marineswife We live on base here in Florida.

Coolmomto3 We are off base here in England. We are lucky in that the housing allowance and COLA are enough for us to live in a nice home in a child-friendly neighborhood.

Housing at our base (Menwith Hill) is ok.....small but most housing here is small regardless of being off or on base. They are at least renovating quarters as folks move out. The AF just took over responsibility of the base from the Army and housing was not up to "AF standards" - imagine that!!!

Q21 We live on base. We weren't sure about this place when my husband left the Corp and joined the AF. They moved us in to brand new housing and it sucks! We are stuck here until at least June. Once my husband's upcoming deployment is over with we will buy, just not sure where yet. NOT in this town.

If the yard Nazi's expect me to mow and tend to the football field next to our house this summer I am fencing it in and puttin' in a pool.

ProtonGal We're off base. We thought about moving on base but we've got so much more room in the house we rent. There's no way we could get a house this big on base and the rent is completely covered by BAH. The utilities on the other hand...

CindyTodd We live off base right now. There is no Coast Guard housing here.

Rapture We're out in town, the BAH is our house payment.
We've never lived on base. I'm not interested in being so monitored and I want more yard space.

Cerise We live on base. I feel so much safer here and like the fact that the inlaws can't just show up whenever they decide. The housing we have is pretty nice, then there are some not so nice on this base too. We just got lucky.

Lisa Pink Pants Off base. We have never lived on base. I wanted to in San Diego but the waiting list for Miramar was two years if you had dogs. Ugh. Now that we're out on the East Coast on Recruiting Duty, there's not really a base near us that would be drivable for my husband. We just bought our first house. Yay!

Kiowa You sound like my husband.

ShellofmyFormerSelf I'm on base but it wasn't by choice. When the ex left, I had to move out of our off-base hosue quickly and there wasn't anything decent available in town so I moved on base. It's convenient because it's about 4 blocks to my office one way and about 3 blocks to daycare the other way but I hate it. When I leave work, I want to *leave* work, KWIM?

EvilBad I miss the DM.

Not all the bases have redone the housing, but they are slowly getting alot of them gutted and remodeled.
08-30-2004 05:08 PM
Camo Ho That's new from when we were there, Mojo. Of course, that WAS 6 years ago. I paid 25 DM for cable back then, back when the rate was almost 2:1.
