rebel Congratulations on 14 miles. I am very doubtful that I will make it the whole way. but that's not what this is all about, right?

Camo Ho *blows dust off journal*

Did 14 miles yesterday with the group my mentor pointed me to. They are in way better shape than me and one is a marathon runner, so I was left in the dust! We did 14 miles in right at 4 hours, I forgot to set my stopwatch, but I know we left a little before 7 and were back right at 11. It was 90% dirt trail and we spent a lot of time dodging bikers and runners and we spent 10 minutes at the midway stop before heading back.

Developed my first blister, right on the base of my big toe. Even under the duct tape. And man-alive are my legs SORE! But knowing we have all day to do only a few more miles than we did in 4 hours makes me feel a lot better about my chances. I was getting pretty down about the likelyhood of me finishing if that was the pace we must do.

Hoping to meet them next Saturady AM for an 11 mile on the same track. Hoping my big-ass blister that just popped at the grocery store heals up by then.

Camo Ho I'm regular as clockwork on my 16 minute miles. I have only done 8 mile stretches, though, but it is holding fairly solid. I need to get out without the kids more. They are troopers walking as much as they are, but I can't get more than a few miles in with them. Dh has been gone 6 out of the last 8 weeks and now that he's finally home, it's hotter than a motherfucker and I just hate it. It's been nice this week and I am trying to walk steady while it is decent. 77 right now, w/ the heat index, at almost Noon, third week of June, in Georgia. Yeah, that is irregular. I'm milking that for all I can!

Camo Ho Been hit & miss with DH on TDY & the rain...my DOG the RAIN!! but I am back on track. Track was muddy and it was hot, but I did 4 miles today in 1:05, so right at 16 minute miles. Been off my walk for a few weeks and I developed two hot spots, soon-to-be-blisters, on the balls of my feet. I did some reading and found a site ( http://www.monmouth.com/~mconnick/blisters.htm ) that recommends duct tape?? Oooooooookay...after reading his bit there, I am going to try it. Muscles were fine. A little tightness heading into mile 3, but smooth sailing nonetheless.

Kids were tired, so we threw in the towel early. I can't walk early in the morning because of the soldiers doing PT and I really don't want to go late at night, but it looks like that is my only choice because the heat kicked my ass today. Dh is gone and I just worry about being out with the kids after dark. I know I shouldn't, that the post is safe enough, but I don't want to make some dumb mistake.

Ah well...

Camo Ho Sorry, I should have noted that TODAY was the first time I've had no muscle issues at all.
04-21-2005 08:59 AM
Camo Ho I had NO muscle issues at all.

I've finally tweeked my calf stretching--I'm pressing my heel out and arching my toes towards me like I want to touch my shin with them. It is leaving me painfree and in great shape.

I finally feel well-oiled and ready to do this. I've even backed off my water and am drinking about 18 ounces for my 3 miles, so I can be better equipped to make it to rest stops.

Harlot I'm a fast walker too, Camo. It doesn't matter how hard I try to slow it down, it just happens.
04-18-2005 09:10 PM
pumpkinsmom You are doing great! I am a very fast walker due to the fact that I'm fitting in as much as I can, when I can. Stop when you are tired but stretch, then go on. Plenty of fluids is so important. I am in awe of what you are doing - keep it up.

Camo Ho OK, 24 weeks and counting!

Did my first 3 mile loop today and it was perfect. Didn't notice any tightness until halfway through my 3rd mile. And it wa snot even bad, just some tightness.

I finished 3 miles in 54 min today, so I am getting much closer to where I need to be. I tell you, I went S-L-O-W today, slower than I thought I should, I just took a nice stroll and I hit one mile at 18 minutes and was STUNNED! I thought I'd have been SO slow! Hit 2 miles at 36 and 3 at 54...I am VERY pleased!
04-08-2005 10:37 AM
Camo Ho Oh, I should note that I did walk in the rain today, since it was light and there was no lightning.
04-08-2005 10:32 AM
Camo Ho Hit the 1/3 mile running track today (since the 2 mile track is MUD after yesterday's storms) and my time was finally a little closer to what I need; 36 min for 2 miles. But I was feeling it today. I stretched before, at halfway and after and again when I got home. I am thinking that the hard track may be part of my problem--the 2 mile track is dirt.

Still need to lengthen my time out a bit, but I am closer now than I was a week ago, or at least work on my endurance, because my pace has me ready to quit when I'm done, let me tell you!

But I guess that is what the next 25 weeks will do for me, right, build endurance? I'm so worried my pace and times are off but I've got 6 months of training to do...I'm thinking I just keep walking and let the shit work itself out.

Harlot Great job Camo!

Stretching is good
04-06-2005 09:07 AM
Camo Ho Well, it was *definitely* my stretching. I've started stretching longer and more effectively before, during and after and I am flying now. 2 miles today with not even a twinge.

I did the 2 mile PT track here in 33 minutes today. That cut 2 minutes off my neighborhood loop time, just from being on level ground and not having to watch for cars.

Camo Ho My legs are still burning and I'm still walking too damned fast. I just can't seem to slow down. Even when I THINK I am crawling, I end up being FASTER than before!

I am just not sure of how to slow down? Maybe when I start feeling the burn, make a concentrated effort to S-L-O-W down? I know my efforts now are not cutting it--I was actually 30 seconds faster today, on the same path, than yesterday and I *though* I was slowed way down. But there is no reason in hell I should be this exhausted after only 1.4 miles, except that I am doing it in 22 minutes. I'm not going to be able to make it long distance at this rate and I start 2 miles tomorrow.

I'm going to talk it over with DH and see what he thinks...I'm thinking I need to stop worrying about the stopwatch, which I honestly don't, I only check it to split my time in front of my house on loop one and to stop it at the end of loop 2.

On a side note, the new sports tank I got at Target is GREAT for walking. I really, really like it. I need to get a white one for wearing under my white 3-day T, I bought two black ones, for some reason.

Camo Ho Thanks! I had not given much thought to sports drinks, but I bought a tub of Gatorade and will be mixing it in, especially as the summer heats up.

Didn't get any walking done this weekend, it rained too damned much! I swear it rained every second of Sunday, from mindnight to midnight.

But, walking is getting easier. When the burn starts, instead of doubting myself, I start thinking about how much better shape I'll be in 6 months from now, when we walk.

I did 1.4 miles today in 22 minutes, and two partsw of it were a rather steep hill, so I am going to re-evaluate my speed, I think I am burning up too much energy too early on. The handbook says we should aim for 3 miles an hour, at that rate (although highly unlikely I could maintain it) , I'd be hitting 3 miles at 45 minutes and that is just too brisk a pace.

My stretching is still not very effective, I'm thinking I am just not stretching long enough. I burned every step of the 1.4 I walked today...Again, that could have been because of my pace? I'm going to try to him my halfway point a little slower my next walking day, since this one left me really feeling it.

pumpkinsmom You can do it! Lots of water and some sort of sport beverage at a ratio of abou 1:1 - you can mix them together or carry two bottles, but hydration is going to be vital for you. You're doing great!

Camo's Journal

Post one, the end week 28, from the walk.

I've walked 1 mile a day the last 3 days, at least. We did a loop on one of the nature trails (which is not training suitable) but my miles have been 18 minutes. But that is easy when you are only DOING one mile.

I need to work on stretching better, I am really feeling my legs the first half a mile or so.

Next week I start 1 1/2 miles at a time. I am loosely following the training schedule ste forth in the handbook, but am starting slowly until I reach Week 24, then I'll start 3 miles at a time and since I am working up to it 1/2 a mile at a time, I think I am doing OK.

The only thing I am really worried about is the GA heat. It is going to be a BITCH this summer. I just do not do well in the heat. I'm such a bad Southern girl.

But I *AM* going to do this, no matter HOW many timnes I tell myself I can't or think there is no way I can train for this, I just tell myself to take it day by day and even the big walk is only 20 miles at a time, into 2-3 mile stretches and I can totally fucking do that.
