Chimi Brown I'm going back to work on Monday. I wasn't off for enough time to qualify for STD or anything else. I had to use all my personal time/vacation, and ended up with almost a full week unpaid.

Lyerin Chimi, you should check into whether your state has a version of the FMLA - I know that my state does and the "limits" are less restrictive than the federal regulations as to who qualifies for leave. Good luck.

Lather To cut your bills you can also see if you can suspend your contracts for cable/cell phone etc.

WhiteTrashBarbie Aww, that bites.

Ella Noise 50 employees within a 75 mile radius. I think.

My workplace does not qualify.

Chimi Brown They will not allow me to work from home. They want me to take a LOA but are pushing me to give them a time frame, and that is something I can't do right now.

I don't think we have enough employees to do FMLA.

WhiteTrashBarbie Update? I hope you got what you needed, Chimi.

Pollyanna When all the stuff went down with Oliver, I qualified for emergency leave and sick leave pool but I know not every employer has those things. I was also allowed to telecommute and all of my stuff was confidential (audit files).

I hope they will allow you to work from home.

Chimi Brown I went in this morning and told my boss that I either needed to take a leave of absence, quit, or work from home effective immediately. I tried to do it without crying, I really did. ::sigh::

She is talking to her boss about the situation and will call me this afternoon to let me know if working from home will be feasible.

WhiteTrashBarbie I was on Family Leave for 3 months when dd was born. It helped that I knew in advance and was able to save some money, which isn't going to apply here.

But, there were some other things I did, like dropping my monthly parking permit (they allowed me to get on a short-wait list)--that was $195 a quarter. Reduce your cable/satellite and phone packages if you can. Use grocery store coupons and use the store circular when grocery shopping. Delay things like seasonal shopping if you can. Rent movies instead of going to the movies. Stretch your hairdressing appointments out until you're back at work. If you owe money on your credit cards, pay only the minimum for the months you are out. Suspend savings, including 401K, for those months as well. Of course you may already be doing some of these things, in which case you may not be able to reduce further.

Also think about what you will be saving by not going to work. Do you eat lunch out? That's a big savings there. Gas to and from work, oil change and wear and tear on your car, dry-cleaning costs if you're not wearing suits. You may be able to cook more from scratch and not rely on convenience foods (but that may depend on how much care you will be giving).

Also, if you carry the health care benefits, hopefully they are just going to take the usual premiums you pay. My company didn't charge the full amount while I was out, but I took an extra month off and had to pay the full cost.

Good luck to you.

AMG Well, I read them as guidelines, not these are the only scenarios that are allowable
04-28-2009 12:33 PM
Chimi Brown None of those scenarios really apply to me for unemployment.

AMG http://www.twc.state.tx.us/ui/bnfts/...1.html#qualify

Quote:
You must be unemployed or partially unemployed through no fault of your own to receive benefits. You should be prepared to present evidence that you tried to correct the problem before you quit.

Examples of qualifying reasons are:

You were laid off due to lack of work.
You are still working but the employer reduced your hours. (Your reduction in hours must not be the result of a disciplinary action.)
You were fired without work-related misconduct. Examples of misconduct are a violation of company policy; violation of law; neglect or mismanagement of your position; or failure to perform your work acceptably if you are capable of doing so.
You quit your job for a good well-documented work-related or medical reason. TWC may rule good cause if the work situation would cause a person who truly wants to keep the job to leave it.
Examples of possible good cause are unsafe working conditions or a significant change in hiring agreement, or not receiving payment for your work.
Examples of medical reasons are quitting on your doctor's advice, or quitting to care for a minor child, or quitting to care for a terminally ill spouse if there is no alternative care provider. You quit to protect yourself from family violence or stalking, evidenced by an active or recently issued protective order, a police record documenting family violence or stalking directed against you, or medical documentation of family violence against you.
Since what I bolded is an one of the examples, maybe you could qualify?
04-28-2009 12:26 PM
AMG It can't hurt to check- all the policies are different. But yeah, probably not.

Sorry

You might be able to claim unemployment - definitely check into that.
04-28-2009 12:17 PM
Chimi Brown I have STD, but I'm not the one disabled. It would be to take care of a family member. Does that matter?
04-28-2009 12:08 PM
AMG Does your firm provide Short Term Disability? that's how we survived after my surgery.
04-28-2009 09:20 AM
Chimi Brown I don't know - for some reason they are freaking out over all the HIPAA stuff. I guess they are going through an audit for a big client, and the client sees security breaches they don't like.
04-28-2009 09:11 AM
47 is Pleonasm Chimi, my husband works from home and uses VPN to handle sensitive patient data. It's not at all impossible (he's been doing it since 1998), so I don't understand your employer's concern.

The government lets people who work with health care records telecommute, so why can't private employers?
04-28-2009 08:55 AM
Chimi Brown
FMLA

When you need to take FMLA for whatever reason, how do you survive financially? My job is the second income, but it pays for 1/3 of the bills or so.

I know we have to cut going out to eat out completely, but how do you reduce, reduce, reduce?

I do have work access on my laptop at home, but I'm thinking they would not offer a work at home scenario. All of the work I do has HIPAA related issues, and they are not crazy about that stuff leaving the office. My boss has already said that they needed to remove the VPN from my laptop.
