josiecat Sweet! Good for you for speaking up.

47 is Pleonasm 40% of the course grade?

Our department head eliminated participation grades completely, because of students (and parents ) who complain

It's such a fuzzy topic and so subjective. I'm frankly glad it's gone.

Good for you for advocating for yourself.

MadCar Good deal! You deserve an A.
04-30-2009 10:48 PM
todolist Well you are getting your A.

funkytown Well, he said he's changing my grade to A. :whew

He poo-pooed all my points before saying it, but hey, they must've been effective .
04-30-2009 02:02 PM
funkytown Apparently. I guess it would have been better just to reiterate points others already made. Seriously, twenty students in this class, including me, spoke regularly. We weren't delving deeply into topics. There is only so much to be said.

He hasn't replied to my email.

Lesson learned: listen to my husband. He's always told me: "Never, NEVER, trust a mofo in a bow tie" and this mofo ALWAYS wore a bow tie.

MadCar Well that's just silly. I could see if you were messing around on a laptop or texting that you would get no credit but if you were paying attention you should get something. It's not your fault you didn't have an opinion to give on a topic. Would the prof prefer you throw out random statements just to get the points?

Our participation score was weighted as 40% of our grade. 40% for participation, yet only one point allowed per class period. I am frustrated.

This is what he did, but that was never made clear. He said that I did not speak up in five class, which frankly, I don't buy. In the classes where I engaged in debate, though, and made numerous statement, I still only received one point.

If it had been clear that we had to speak in every class, I would have done that. I was under the impression, though, that it was overall class participation and overall, my participation was certainly not average.

I just sent him an email, making the argument that I earned an A in his class. Hopefully, it is well-received. We shall see...

Soloxine Yeah, I'd want some kind of explanation of that.

47 is Pleonasm How does the prof quantify participation like that? Does he check off every time someone speaks?

I have given 100, 90, 80, 70, 60 for participation--not 77

Imagine--a class where you discuss political issues...

...now, imagine me getting a 77% participation grade for that class.

Can you imagine it? Yeah, me neither.

But, that's precisely what my ethics professor gave me.
