Hi, You may want to check out your Evenflo convertible seat. If the manufacture date was 1996 then your seat is expired and needs to be replaced.
Most car seats expire after 5-6 years.

I've flown with marathons and wizards in the past with no problems. It can be a little tight rear facing but the install is easy enough.
